Field Trip No. 1, November 13, 2011
Geology of Frick Park, is the largest park of City of Pittsburgh, in partnership with Nine Mile Run Watershed Association, Sunday, November 13, 2011, 1 at 3:30 P.M. The contact for Field Trip 1, is the Nine Mile Run Association, 412-371-8779, www.ninemilerun.org, this fieldtrip is free but limited.
The Geology, erosion features, and ancient climate change are part of the great Frick Park landscape of the City of Pittsburgh. This field trip of 2.5 hours covers remnant features of the ice age 1.2 million years ago to the present, landslides, and discussion on the deposition and climate change of the sedimentary rocks of the Pennsylvanian Period 300 million years. We will stop at one of the great vista anywhere in the city.

North Park, the largest of the Allegheny County Parks, is featured in a geology hike of 2 hours that will discuss the ancient sedimentary rocks of the Pennsylvanian Period deposited when the earth was experiencing the greatest ice age in it’s history. Tropical seas and coal swamps abound with ancient river sands that formed thick sandstones and massive cliffs of today. Erosion and landslides are major features which we will see as we walk through the park.
